ABSTRACT

Objective To summarize and analyze the features of liver function in pediatric patients infected with Delta variant versus Omicron variant of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS - CoV - 2). Methods In this study,an analysis was performed for the liver function test results of the locally transmitted or imported pediatric patients with SARS - CoV - 2 infection during isolation who were admitted to Guangzhou Eighth People's Hospital,Guangzhou Medical University,since May 21,2021,and the clinical data and the constituent ratio of liver injury were compared between the pediatric patients infected with Delta variant and those infected with Omicron variant. The independent samples t - test or the Mann - Whitney U test was used for comparison of continuous data between two groups,and the chi - square test or the Fisher's exact test was used for comparison of categorical data between two groups. Results A total of 85 pediatric patients infected with SARS - CoV - 2 were enrolled,among whom there were 32 (37. 6%)pediatric patients infected with Delta variant and 53 (62. 4%)pediatric patients infected with Omicron variant,and there were no significant differences between the two groups in age,sex, body height,body weight,and comorbidities (all P > 0. 05). There were no significant differences between the two groups in alanine aminotransferase (ALT),aspartate aminotransferase (AST),alkaline phosphatase (ALP),gamma - glutamyl transpeptidase,total bilirubin,albumin,and cholinesterase (all P > 0. 05),and the pediatric patients infected with Omicron variant had a significantly higher level of total bile acid (TBA)than those infected with Delta variant (Z = - 2. 336,P = 0. 020). However,the median values of TBA were within the normal range and the ratios of abnormal TBA were no significant difference between the two groups (P > 0. 05). Among the 85 pediatric patients,10 (11. 8%)had a mild increase in liver function parameters,among whom 7 had an increase in TBA,1 had an increase in ALT, 1 had increases in ALT and AST,and 1 had an increase in ALP. The analysis of liver injury in the pediatric patients infected with Delta variant or Omicron variant showed that there was no significant difference in the constituent ratio of liver injury caused by the two variants (6. 3% vs 15. 1%,chi2 = 0. 691,P = 0. 406). Conclusion Mild liver injury is observed in pediatric patients infected with Delta and Omicron variants of SARS - CoV - 2,but further studies are needed to evaluate the long - term influence of such infection on liver function.Copyright © 2022 Editorial Board of Jilin University

ABSTRACT

Objective: In the twenty-first century, despite the development in infection management, and improvement of vaccines and therapeutic agents in the field of health, new viral outbreaks that can still be fatal in humans and animals are emerging. The infection of zoonosis COVID-19 from bat origin, the intermediate host of which is still being unclear, has appeared in people who visited animal bazaar in December 2019, in Wuhan, China. The World Health Organization declared this infection a pandemic in February 2020. Millions of people have been affected by this pandemic. The fight against the pandemic has had a great economic cost and continues to do so. Even people have changed their lifestyle. In this context, there have been concerns about companion animals with COVID-19 transmission, from human to animal or animal to human. The purpose of this review was to examine the studies on the presence and transmission of COVID-19 in companion animals such as cats, dogs, hamsters and horses. Result and Discussion: It has been reported in studies that most of the companion animals (cat, dog and hamster) were susceptible to SARS-CoV-2, and humans could be a source of infection for them. However, the potential role of companion animals in transmission to humans is not fully known. It is clear from this pandemic that the necessity of epidemiological investigation of infectious agents, especially zoonotic ones, in one health concept has emerged once again.Copyright © 2022 University of Ankara. ABSTRACT

We retrospectively report a case of rapid exchange of a percutaneous radiologic gastrostomy tube (balloon-occluded type catheter) via off-label use of a pigtail catheter for nutrition supply during a very early episode of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) in an outpatient clinic. This case demonstrates that minimally invasive percutaneous procedures might be provided safely and effectively under appropriate precautions for preventing COVID-19 transmission during the pandemic.Copyright © 2023, Society of Gastrointestinal Intervention.

ABSTRACT

In the aircraft cabin, passengers must share a confined environment with other passengers during boarding, flight, and disembarkation, which poses a risk for virus transmission and requires risk-appropriate mitigation strategies. Spacing between passenger groups during boarding and disembarkation reduces the risk of transmission, and optimized sequencing of passenger groups helps to significantly reduce boarding and disembarkation time. We considered passenger groups to be an important factor in overall operational efficiency. The basic idea of our concept is that the members of a group should not be separated, since they were already traveling as a group before entering the aircraft. However, to comply with COVID-19 regulations, different passenger groups should be separated spatially. For the particular challenge of disembarkation, we assume that passenger groups will be informed directly when they are allowed to leave for disembarkation. Today, cabin lighting could be used for this information process, but in a future digitally connected cabin, passengers could be informed directly via their personal devices. These devices could also be used to check the required distances between passengers. The implementation of optimized group sequencing has the potential to significantly reduce boarding and disembarkation times, taking into account COVID-19 constraints. © 2022 ICAS. ABSTRACT

Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) is an emerging disease with a rapid increase in cases and deaths since its first discovery in December 2019, in Wuhan, China. Limited data are available on COVID-19 effects during pregnancy;however, information on diseases associated with other highly pathogenic coronaviruses (i.e. Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome [SARS] and the Middle East respiratory syndrome [MERS]) may provide insight into the effects of COVID-19 during pregnancy. Coronaviruses cause illnesses ranging from the common cold to severe respiratory disease and death. The data indicate an average of 5 days incubation period (range: 2-14 days). The average age range of the hospitalized patients was 49-56 years, and a third to half of them have an underlying illness. Children were rarely mentioned. Within hospitalized cases, men were more frequent (54%-73%). Fever, cough, myalgia, vomiting, and diarrhea are common symptoms. This review aims at giving an in-depth understanding of COVID-19 by comparing its effects with SARS and MERS to evaluate its severity in pregnant women1. The results of varied studies show that COVID-19 affects pregnant women seriously and there is an alarming need to look into this aspect to prevent its harmful effects on the fetus.Copyright © 2020

ABSTRACT

This paper presented a brief introduction to the outbreak process and symptoms of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), elucidated the detection methods and transmission modes of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) that caused the disease, and summarized the survival time of SARS-COV-2 in different media and different physical and chemical conditions and factors that could affect the long-term survival of the virus. This paper also summed up current risk assessments of SARS-COV-2 in food safety conducted in various countries, and concluded that the risk of SARS-COV-2 to food safety is very low, but preventive measures are still in need after referring to latest research. Finally, some methods to prevent SARS-COV-2 contamination in food were introduced, aiming to provide a basis for the formulation of policy measures in the future.Copyright © 2021, Shanghai Municipal Center for Disease Control and Prevention. ABSTRACT

Ever since the beginning of COVID-19 pandemic, uncertainty regarding clinical presentation and differences among various subpopulations exist. With more than 209,870,000 confirmed cases and more than 4,400,000 deaths worldwide, we are facing the new era of health crisis which will undoubtedly impair global health, economic and social circumstances. In the past year, numerous genetic mutations which code SARS-CoV-2 proteins led to the occurrence of new viral strains, with higher transmission rates. Apart from the implementation of vaccination, the effect of SARS-CoV-2 on pregnancy outcome and maternal fetal transmission remains an important concern. Although neonates diagnosed with COVID-19 were mostly asymptomatic or presented with mild disease, the effect on early pregnancy is yet to be evident. While positive finding of SARS-CoV-2 RNA in some samples such as amniotic fluid, placental tissue, cord blood and breast milk exists, additional research should confirm its association with transplacental transmission.Copyright © 2022, Dr. Mladen Stojanovic University Hospital. ABSTRACT

Risk and predisposing factors for viral zoonoses abound in the sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) region with significant public health implications. For several decades, there have been several reports on the emergence and re-emergence of arbovirus infections. The lifetime burden of arboviral diseases in developing countries is still poorly understood. Studies indicate significant healthcare disruptions and economic losses attributed to the viruses in resource-poor communities marked by impairment in the performance of daily activities. Arboviruses have reportedly evolved survival strategies to aid their proliferation in favorable niches, further magnifying their public health relevance. However, there is poor knowledge about the viruses in the region. Thus, this review presents a survey of zoonotic arboviruses in SSA, the burden associated with their diseases, management of diseases as well as their prevention and control, mobility and determinants of infections, their vectors, and co-infection with various microorganisms. Lessons learned from the ongoing coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic coupled with routine surveillance of zoonotic hosts for these viruses will improve our understanding of their evolution, their potential to cause a pandemic, control and prevention measures, and vaccine development.Copyright © GERMS 2022.

ABSTRACT

Youth is a key period of life to ensure future well-being, especially in relation to sexuality. The general objective is to analyze the sexual education of young people today regarding sexual practices and to study the use of contraceptive methods. Material(s) and Method(s): It is a cross-sectional, observational study of cases. Designed a digital questionnaire made with Google consisting of 26 items and 3 blocks: social-demographic data, female sexuality and sexual health. Data analysis the statistical program SPSS 25.0. Result(s): The sample obtained: 1320 women. Social-demographic data: ages between 15 and 29 years and 58.3% of the women had a partner. The most frequent sexual orientation: 77% heterosexual. Female sexuality: for 63.9% of women, sex is an important part of their relationships and 43.3% consider themselves attractive people. The most rejected practices: anal sex, during menstruation or with the light on. 4.7% do not feel prepared to require their sexual partner to use a condom. 9.7% are not able to request sexual practices that they want. 6.2% state that they do not avoid any practice despite the fact that some of them cause discomfort. During the Covid-19 situation, the frequency of sexual relations decreases by 49% and the absent practices of viral transmission via online increase. Regarding sexual education, we observe that the majority have been provided by friends, that is, unqualified personnel. The most explained topics are focused on the traditional aspects of sexual health and human development, therefore it is an education that is not of quality, data confirmed by 58% of women. The contraceptive methods most used by women are condoms and oral contraceptives, whose main purpose is the prevention of pregnancy and sexually transmitted infections (condoms). Its use can have negative connotations such as decreased sexual desire, excitement, sensitivity and orgasm disorders. Conclusion(s): Currently, young women perceive sexuality more and more naturally, talking about it without fear or censorship. Sex educators are mostly not qualified personnel. The SARS-CoV2 (Covid-19) situation increases the number of sexual practices online, decreasing it. The contraceptive methods most used by women are condoms and oral contraceptives.Copyright © 2023

ABSTRACT

Objective To investigate the clinical features of patients with severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) Delta variant infection and abnormal liver function in Guangdong Province, China. Methods The patients with SARS-CoV-2 Delta variant infection who belonged to the same chain of transmission in Guangdong Province (Guangzhou and Foshan) and were admitted to Guangzhou Eighth People's Hospital, Guangzhou Medical University from May 21 to June 18, 2021 were enrolled in this study, and the judgment criteria for liver function were alanine aminotransferase (male/female) > 50/40 U/L, aspartate aminotransferase > 40 U/L, total bilirubin > 26 mumol/L, gamma-glutamyl transpeptidase > 60 U/L, and alkaline phosphatase (ALK) > 125 U/L. Abnormality in any one item of the above criteria was defined as abnormal liver function, and such patients were included in analysis (the patients, aged < 18 years, who had a mild or moderate increase in ALP alone were not included in analysis). Clinical data were compared between the patients with normal liver function and those with abnormal liver function, and the etiology and prognosis of abnormal liver function were analyzed. The Mann-Whitney U test was used for comparison of continuous data between two groups;the chi-square test was used for comparison of categorical data between two groups. Results Among the 166 patients with SARS-CoV-2 Delta variant infection, 32 (19.3%) had abnormal liver function with mild-to-moderate increases in liver function parameters, and compared with the normal liver function group, the abnormal liver function group had a significantly higher proportion of critical patients (chi2=38.689, P < 0.001) and significantly higher age and inflammatory cytokines [C-reactive protein type, serum amyloid A, and interleukin-6 (IL-6)](all P < 0.05). Among the 32 patients with abnormal liver function, 13 patients had abnormal liver function on admission (defined as primary group), while 19 patients had normal liver function on admission but were found to have abnormal liver function by reexamination after treatment (defined as secondary group). For the primary group, the evidence of abnormal liver function was not found for 3 patients (3/13, 23.1%), and the possibility of toxic liver injury directly associated with SARS-CoV-2 infection was considered. Among the 19 patients in the secondary group, 9 (47.4%) had mild/common type and 10 (52.6%) had critical type, and all critical patients had the evidence of liver injury indirectly caused by the significant increases in C-reactive protein type, serum amyloid A, and IL-6 and hypoxemia;the evidence of abnormal liver function was not found for only 1 patient (1/19, 5.3%), and the possibility of toxic liver injury directly associated with SARS-CoV-2 infection was considered. All 32 patients with abnormal liver function had [JP2]significant reductions in liver function parameters after treatment including liver protection. Conclusion As for the patients with SARS-CoV-2 Delta variant infection who belong to the same chain of transmission in Guangdong Province, the critical patients show a significantly higher proportion of patients with abnormal liver function than the patients with other clinical types, and other factors except SARS-CoV-2 infection and indirect injury caused by SARS-CoV-2 infection are the main cause of liver injury.Copyright © 2022 Editorial Board of Jilin University. ABSTRACT

Background: In March 2020, the world health organization declared COVID-19 a world wide pandemic. Countries introduced public health measures to contain and reduce its spread. The effect of mandated societal lockdown to reduce the transmission of corona virus disease 2019 (COVID-19) on road traffic accidents is not known. For this we performed an in-depth analysis singdata of emergency and trauma centre UPUMS, Saifai. As most of the manpower was involved in managing Covid patients directly or indirectly, it was a challenge to manage these mass casualty patients who require intensive care as well as Medicolegal documentation, record keeping, Consent for life saving procedures in absence of Relatives. Material(s) and Method(s): We reviewed data on total 2876 road traffic accident records in UPUMS, Saifai from January 1, 2020 through September 30, 2020. We treated March 20th as the first day of mandated societal lock down and 1st July as the first day of re-opening. Result(s): We have found that the reis increase in road traffic accidents resulting in serious or fatal injuries during lockdown and post-lockdown period. There was increased Medicolegal burden in spite of the decreased medical resources, manpower as most of manpower and resources were being utilized for covid patients. Conclusion(s): Road traffic accidents are a prominent contributor to hospitalization and may negatively impact the existing hospital resources directed towards COVID-19.Copyright © 2023, World Informations Syndicate. ABSTRACT

Objectives: COVID-19 reached its fourth year of pandemic since 2020. The repeated waves of infections have been driven by multiple factors such as pathological traits of variants, diagnostic accuracy, and vaccination conditions. This study revisits and analyzes the dynamic processes of viral transmission to generate new scientific knowledge. Method(s): A cascade model of viral transmission from one case to another was developed, and theoretically analyzed how the number of infected cases at time t, D+[t], can be changed at time t+1, D+[t+1], considering six parameters: 1) k:level of transmission, 2) Rt: effective reproduction number, 3) rho: capture rate of infected cases, 4) theta: immunity protection rate in individuals, 5) epsilon: evasion rate from vaccines, and 6) Sn: test sensitivity. Result(s): The formula which associates D+[t] with D+[t+1] was given as follows: D+[t+1] = K.D+[t], where K = {(1-Sn) + (1-rho) / rho}{1-Rtk (1-theta(1-epsilon))k} / {1-Rt (1-theta(1-epsilon))}. Also, assuming K be smaller than 1, the lower limit of test sensitivity to stop the viral transmission was formulated: Sn > {Rt (1-theta(1-epsilon))-Rtk(1-theta(1-epsilon))k} / {(1-Rtk(1-theta(1-epsilon))k)rho}. In example computations, the formula indicated that a one-off PCR test with the sensitivity of 85% would not be sufficient to contain highly contagious infections such as the Omicron variants, and that it would be practically impossible to control the situation with the immune-evasive sub-variants in circulation. Conclusion(s): The theory developed in this study broadens the science on evidence-based public health and will be useful for outcomes studies and informed decisions on public policy for pandemic control.Copyright © 2023

ABSTRACT

The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) rapidly spread worldwide. Although several vaccines have been developed to control the spread of the disease, the safety and efficacy of the vaccine to patients with autoimmune liver disease are uncertain. However, subjects need to decide whether to receive the vaccine for severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). This study found that 29 of 40 patients with autoimmune liver disease experienced anxiety to receive the SARS-CoV-2 vaccine. After providing information about COVID-19 and the vaccines, the number of patients with vaccination anxiety was reduced from 40 to 14 (p=0.000685). Appropriate provision of the information of COVID-19 and the vaccine improved vaccine anxiety in patients with autoimmune liver disease.Copyright © 2021 The Japan Society of Hepatology.
